How One-on-One Coaching Helped Clay Shift His Mindset, Master Meal Prep, and Build Lasting Habits
From fried chicken, to pizza, to milkshakes and ice cream: for Clay Fitzhugh, his weekends were “an eating frenzy.”
“The weekends were a big problem for me. I would go off the rails,” said Clay, whose weight got up to 260 pounds two years ago.
He tried all kinds of weight loss and body recomposition programs along the way, “but I didn’t have much success,” he confessed.
In the summer of 2024, Clay, the owner of a gym, was talking to his wife about fitness. She had mentioned that she had worked with CBG Coach Justyna Dapuzzo and had experienced significant results.
“So I scheduled a call and it seemed we were a good fit,” Clay said.
Right away, Clay was impressed with CBG.
Clay’s CBG Journey
Clay’s journey working with Coach Justyna was equal parts physical and mental.
Coach Justyna worked with him on eating better quality foods and consuming appropriate portion sizes. Coach Justyna also helped with healing his relationship with food.
The result: After one year, Clay had lost 40 pounds and felt like he had the tools to continue on his own.
Since he started his journey with CBG, Clay has continued employing the CBG methodology and has kept the weight off for another year. He felt that it wasn’t that challenging.
“It has been easy, because the principles and foundations of the program have stuck with me. Once you know how to structure your meals and you know generally what to eat, you don’t have to worry about counting your macros or bringing a scale to a restaurant,” Clay said.
He continued: “CBG provided me with a more intrinsic, intuitive approach to eating, and it just makes sense.”
Today, Clay has a routine for his meal preps for the week. This often means using his smoker to make pulled pork or chicken. He focuses on eating well most of the time without being consumed with being perfect.
He no longer eats “a couple of chocolate chip cookies” for breakfast. Now, it’s often oatmeal before an early morning workout. He enjoys meat for dinner “with the appropriate amount of carbs and fat,” explained Clay. His success has him training as a Strongman athlete!
On the weekends, he still allows himself what he calls a “cheat meal,” but he doesn’t “go off the rails” for an entire weekend like he did in the past.
He credits Coach Justyna for giving him the tools to make these lasting changes.
“[Coach] Justyna was extremely patient. I very much strive for perfection, and if I’m not perfect I think I’m a failure,” Clay said. “So the biggest [accomplishment] was how she helped me with my mindset.”
He continued: “Before, if I wasn’t making the progress I thought I should be making, I would be so hard on myself and it would lead to deviations. So she really worked with me to help me see that if I’m not seeing immediate success, that doesn’t mean what I’m doing isn’t working.”
The one on one coaching he received from Coach Justyna was invaluable to his mindset shift.
“She also helped me be less consumed with numbers. Before, I was so fixated on the scale, and if the scale didn’t move, I would go binge eat,” he said.
Clay’s Message: Consistency Over Perfection
Coach Justyna helped him move away from the all-or-nothing. Clay stopped thinking that it was either perfection or failure. With his new mindset, he saw results. This pushed him to take more steps forward.
“I have made so much progress, and I don’t want to go back to where I was, so that makes it easier to stick with it,” he said.
Best of all, equipped with the CBG methodology today, Clay feels like he can continue on the path Coach Justyna helped put him on. He feels that he can keep fueling his body in a healthy way in the long term.
“[The CBG method] just allows more flexibility than most other nutrition programs,” Clay said.
“Life is so unpredictable, and it’s busy, so it’s really hard for most people to stay on a strict, regimented eating schedule. This way of eating just makes a heck of a lot more sense.”
